Tree of Life: Creating a decorative composition by means of computer graphics

The article is devoted to own author’s experience of acquaintance of students of basic and senior school with decorative art of Cherkasy region and its features. Moreover, creation of decorative composition according to own plan using means of computer graphics by the example of an integrated lessons on the topic “Creation of an ornament “Tree of Life” during such courses as “Decorative and Applied Arts” and “Computer Graphics” in the educational process of specialized secondary school with in-depth study of humanitarian and aesthetic subjects.
The students did their creative work in two stages. The first stage of the work involved acquaintance of students with the ornamental style of the symbol “Tree of Life”, understanding its features and studying the patterns at lessons of decorative and applied arts. The purpose of this stage was to teach pupils to notice the shape of trees, animals and plants in the world around them; to feel expediency and harmony of natural forms; to find a balance of elements and motives in a holistic composition; teach a “meaningful” understanding of composition; to develop the interest of Ukrainian art and the desire to learn about it.
The second stage of the work took place at lessons of computer graphics, where the “Tree of Life” ornament was made in the computer CorelDraw graphic editor. The students created a stylized image using simple geometric shapes (circle, oval, square, etc.); at the same time students learned how to use various elements in the graphic editor: to move elements on a working field; to increase or decrease them; to copy elements in a circle and in a mirror image; use the palette.
The main feature of the graphic editor CorelDraw is the ability to combine techniques using the tool “Curve”, which helps to implement the creative ideas of students.
The mentioned system of the integrated lessons can be used in practice of teaching fine arts in general secondary education institutions, colleges of art, out-of-school educational institutions, etc.
