Abstract

The article is devoted to the essence of a stylistic approach to the study of opera by students. It is emphasized that the traditional school practice of studying artistic styles and movements through opera typically involves analyzing and interpreting the musical dramaturgy of the works. However, mastering the genre of opera within the context of artistic styles requires a broader stylistic approach. A stylistic approach implies viewing an opera as a performance through the unity of the musical score, directorial decisions, and performance images. Together, these elements constitute a holistic “performing image” as a synthetic stage action.
Under the “performing image of opera” the author proposes to consider the unity of the vocal component (the singer’s talent, voice, and technical mastery), the dramaturgy of the character’s vocal part development, acting skills, and the construction of the role’s dramaturgy. The aim of the article is to demonstrate, through several examples of operas, the possibilities for their interpretation to ensure a comprehensive mastery of the concept of artistic style among students.
The author draws upon theoretical research on artistic styles, stylistic approaches to the analysis of music and musical-scenic works, and vocal opera performance as a stage phenomenon. Furthermore, the study accounts for the content of “Art” integrated course textbooks and manuals by various authors/collectives from different years of publication.
The article provides examples from prominent Western European opera productions, particularly those that utilize “Oriental” motifs. The main focus is on the original national style of contemporary Chinese opera. Additionally, a comparison of various productions of Ukrainian opera is presented to deepen understanding of the concept of “artistic style”. Recommendations for art teachers are also proposed.
