Making a paper toy decorated in the style of the Yavoriv painting by students

The article highlights the current issue of preserving and popularizing the Yavoriv painting, a unique phenomenon in Ukrainian folk art. The author emphasizes that the cultural and aesthetic significance of this art lies in the special technique and symbolism. The author discusses the potential integration of Yavoriv painting elements into the educational process of the New Ukrainian School. This is proposed to be implemented not only within the framework of art lessons but also through interdisciplinary connections with history, the Ukrainian language, and literature, which enables the formation of a holistic understanding of cultural heritage.
The key point in the article is a practical description of the master class held with 7th-grade students within the framework of the topic “Design. Folk Crafts”. The lesson aimed to familiarize schoolchildren with the features of Yavoriv painting, including its colour scheme and motifs. Using the example of making a paper toy “horse”, the author demonstrates how theory and practice can be effectively combined.
The gradual description of the master class includes the following stages of work: 1) theoretical: first, students were given a brief introduction to the history and characteristic features of Yavoriv painting. 2) preparatory, during which the main elements of the ornament were considered, as well as a special colour scheme. 3) practical, which involved making the base: students started working with paper. Using templates, they cut out a horse figure as a basis for further decoration. This stage contributed to the development of skills in working with materials and tools. 4) creative and practical: students decorated the product to recreate traditional elements of the painting. 5) reflective: discussion of the compositions and symbols created by the students, analysis of the elements used.
The author emphasizes that the free drawing technique, which is typical of Yavoriv painting, allowed students to express their creativity, making the process more engaging. The result of the master class was the immersion of students in the world of Ukrainian culture, providing them with the opportunity to feel part of a rich history and to appreciate the value of folk traditions.
