Abstract

The article is devoted to the significance of mass music education and formation of a young person. The main emphasis is on the expansion of students’ knowledge of intonation, the development of their emotional response to music, and formation of a steady interest in music. In particular, attention is paid to the importance of formation of students’ musical preferences in institutions of general secondary education.

The peculiarities of the formation of pupils’ musical preferences in basic school at music lessons have been substantiated. The main differences between the concepts of “preferences”, “interest” and “artistic taste” have been found out. It was determined that students’ musical taste and artistic interest are formed on acquired listening experience, but musical preferences are formed on the ability to flexibility, plasticity and dynamism of cognitive processes. It distinguishes these two processes by their nature and content.

The author highlights the significance of the musical-stylistic approach in teacher’s activities at music lessons. The main musical styles and genres in order to develop the pupils’ multivariate preferences are: folklore, academic music, jazz, pop and rock music. The importance of improvisation as an effective method for the formation of students’ artistic preference has been carried out. The key features of the study of jazz and improvisation at music lessons at school have been determined. The author proposes the logic how to study jazz at school music lessons. It is based on the gradual complication of jazz music in the context of its historical and cultural development and transformations.
