Abstract

The article presents the genesis of development of traditional graphic printing techniques – engraving and etching from their origin to the XXI century. The types and features of the production of engraving of high-quality printing (line engraving, engraving on cardboard, wood/plastic, metal) and intaglio printing (etching), black-and-white engraving and colour engraving are presented. The peculiarities of etching as one of the varieties of engraving are described. The author shows the works of artists from different centuries and countries, who worked in graphic techniques – engravings and etching.

The characteristics of studying of graphic arts by students of different age groups of the Municipal Institution of Higher Education of Kyiv Academy of Arts are presented, that is taught in the author’s program based on the principles of consistency, systemic and continuity. According to the program, the content of studying of graphic art by students is divided into groups. In the junior group, the content is to familiarize with various artistic materials and tools, to implement simple black-and-white and colour graphic images, to learn about the laws of rhythm, contrast, balance, etc., to familiarize with monotype, etching. In the middle group, the content is to deepen knowledge and skills of working with graphic materials, to familiarize with line engraving and engraving on cardboard. In the senior group, the content is to improve students’ knowledge and skills, to learn about diptych, triptych, polyptych, series, engraving on wood, colour engraving, to deepen the laws of composition.

Based on pedagogical experience, the author presents the stages how to perform by 9th grade students their own artistic works in the technique of etching with methodological and pedagogical support of their work. The provided methodological recommendations will be useful for both teachers of graphics in specialized artistic institutions and teachers of fine arts in general education institutions.
