Illustration of Shevchenkiana (works of T. Shevchenko and his biography) in children’s publications of the XX – the early XXI centuries in the context of development of book design

The problems of illustrating of Taras Shevchenko’s works and his biography in books addressed to children for over a hundred years have been studied. Using a wide source, retrospective analysis and generalization of trends in interpretation of images of literary heroes, as well as the evolution of the poet’s iconography in illustrations have been made. It is traced how each new generation of artists, representatives of different stylistic currents of fine arts, who had different philosophical and aesthetic views, created in different periods of social development, political changes, ideological guidelines, “reread” texts in the textbook. The attention is paid on the work of artists with bright individual handwriting, who made a significant contribution to the art of Ukrainian books, including children’s books.
The topics of development of children’s book design are covered: decoration, fonts, ornamentation, harmonious combination of text and its figurative interpretation in the composition of pages and unfolding. The design and composition of the book has undergone radical, revolutionary changes over the centuries due to improvement of printing production, and especially with the advent of electronic and digital technologies, design computer programs that open wide opportunities for experimentation, implementation of innovative projects. Earlier artists worked in traditional graphic techniques: woodcut, linocut, etching, pencil, ink, pen, watercolor, tempera, gouache. Nowadays, they use computer graphics, create original compositions and layouts of books.
It is emphasized that the main task of illustrators, designers of children’s publications is to create communication with young readers, to find ways to convey to children of different ages not only message but also the emotional content of Taras Shevchenko’s works. Today, this issue has become really urgent. In fact, psychologists and educators state the crisis of reading, the so-called “clip thinking” of modern children, the victory of visual over verbal in their perception of information. Therefore, the quality of illustrations, general design of books has a great influence on aesthetic, moral, national education, development of emotional intelligence of young readers.
