Features of a full-length portrait painted by fourth-graders

The article deals with the teacher’s consistent work on mastering the topic “Portrait as a genre of fine arts” by 4th grade students in the educational program “The world is waiting for the winged” within the integrated subject “Art Technology and Informatics” (module “Fine Arts”). The following themes are presented: “A full-length portrait of a person. The portrait “My father/My grandfather “in painting technique”, socio-cultural theme of the week: “Calendar dates of September”; “Artist-graphic. Making comics “Rules how to behave on a visit “in graphic technique”, socio-cultural theme of the week: “I am among people”; “Human in motion. Making a moving model of human. Making an emblem using stencil technique on the theme of the “Olympic Games”, socio-cultural theme of the week: “Sports Kaleidoscope”; “Artist-designer. Drawing a sketch of a dress or costume for a dance party from improvised materials” (socio-cultural theme of the week: “In the world of economics”).
The stages of work on a portrait are considered: students’ analysis-interpretation of artists-portraitists’ paintings; acquaintance with types of a portrait (ceremonial, chamber, historical, portrait-picture, portrait-walk, portrait-costume and its variant – a portrait in a role, a full-length self-portrait), proportions and a body parts, making a moving model of a person from the proportional parts, which are stapled, which allows students to see how the position of the human body changes depending on the change of movement), drawing a person in statics and dynamics.
Methodological advice how to develop students’ ability to draw a full-length portrait is presented. The examples of tasks from students’ book promote development of students’ subject competencies how to draw the sequence of a full-length portrait, a person in motion and soft skills (reading comprehension, ability to express one’s own thoughts, creative thinking, initiative, cooperation, and planning one’s own activities).
The presented tips can be used in teaching fine arts in general secondary education institutions, children’s art centres and other educational institutions.
