Performing of compositions in the format of diptych / triptych in linocut technique

The article deals with the peculiarities of studying graphics by students of the Kyiv Children Chamberzhi Academy of Arts of the municipal structural subdivision of the higher education institution “Kyiv Academy of Arts” in different educational levels. The author focuses on mastering “Graphics” as one of the professional disciplines at the Department of Fine Arts that includes the study of free graphic and printing techniques in primary school (grades 1-4), secondary school (grades 5-9), and high school (grades 10-11). The author’s pedagogical experience in using engraving techniques at graphics classes as well as the features of its mastery by high school students are presented. The ways of realization of students’ artistic ideas through linocut as one of the directions of engraving are investigated.
The author focuses on the following stages of making the plot compositions by 10th-graders in the format of a diptych or triptych using linocut technique: to acquaint with historical information on the origin of the terms “diptych”/ “triptych”, with a piece of art of modern authors working in these formats; to do short-term training exercises for tonal and linear analysis of a classical work in the format of diptych or triptych of one’s choice; creation of students’ own works in one of the chosen formats (stage of sketching, stage of performing of “working cardboards”, preparation of a printing board for engraving, engraving of the image of composition, making prints).
The methodological advice on how to organize and to create content of classes in the format of diptych / triptych in linocut technique provides examples of image engraving using methods and techniques of easel and printed graphics.
It is noted that the purpose of students’ work in linocut technique is to improve practical skills in printing graphics, the ability to operate with techniques of tonal and colour ratios, to develop students’ individual creative style.
The presented advice on the described system of compositions in the format of diptych / triptych in linocut technique can be used in teaching fine arts in general secondary education, secondary art education, art colleges, children’s art centres, clubs, creative associations and other educational institutions.
