The article examines theoretical and methodological foundations for developing environmental competence among first-year architecture students within the framework of a course project focused on designing a recreational house. The study highlights the growing importance of ecological awareness in contemporary architectural education, where sustainable design principles, responsible resource management, and sensitivity to natural landscapes become essential components of professional training. Based on an analysis of recent research on environmental competence, sustainable architectural design, and climate-responsive planning, the article outlines a structured educational model integrating lectures, pre-design studies, and project-based learning activities.
Special attention is devoted to the introductory lecture, which familiarizes students with types of recreation, criteria for selecting a suitable site, and key ecological, climatic, and geographic factors that must be considered in environmentally responsible architectural decision-making. Pre-design research tasks guide students in analysing natural conditions, assessing regional infrastructure, and evaluating engineering requirements related to energy supply, water resources, waste management, and the potential for autonomous operation of a small recreational facility.
The practical task “Recreation Model” enables students to apply theoretical knowledge by developing a functional scheme of the house and adjoining territory, establishing relationships between indoor and outdoor spaces, and proposing spatial solutions that address safety, ecological constraints, and sustainable resource use. The methodological approach presented in the article demonstrates how integrating scientific knowledge, analytical skills, and ecological values supports the development of comprehensive environmental competence in beginning architecture students and prepares them for future professional challenges in sustainable design.
