The article explores the pedagogical potential of the propaedeutic study of composition by students of higher art education institutions as a basis for the formation of their professional thinking. The initial study of composition is examined as a means of training the mechanisms of visual analysis, synthesis, generalization, and associative perception through engagement with form, proportion, rhythm, contrast, and scale as universal categories of visual organization in an artwork.
Propaedeutic tasks are those that develop a sense of form and compositional intuition, enable independent artistic decision-making, strengthen the interconnections among perception, analysis, and motor skills, and stimulate reflective thinking as a foundation for professional self-assessment.
Formal composition, as a distinct educational problem, is regarded as an instrument for mastering compositional principles without imitating reality. It is aimed at the awareness of the intrinsic value of form, the analysis of the structural basis of an artwork, and the acquisition of the expressive and semantic capacities of the language of visual art. The high degree of abstraction inherent in the elements of artistic form lends this stage of learning a universal character applicable to all art-related specializations.
The article also substantiates the effectiveness of formal-analytical and problem-based methods in teaching composition, defines the stages of its study, and outlines criteria for evaluating students’ creative performance. A system of introductory practical tasks in the propaedeutics of composition is proposed, including exercises focused on simplification, verbalization of abstraction, analysis of compositional structures, creation of associative compositions, as well as formal studies based on elementary visual components such as point, line, and spot.
The proposed system fosters in future artists the ability to plan an artistic concept, make informed creative decisions, and perform structural analysis—skills that form the cognitive and methodological foundation of professional artistic thinking.
