Training future music teachers to teach pipe playing to primary students

The article presents the organizational and methodological foundations for preparing future music teachers to teach pipe playing to primary students (Ukrainian folk flute). The authors identify a set of instrumental, performance, music-theoretical, and methodological training measures for students of higher education in the specialty 014 Secondary Education (Music) aimed at equipping future music teachers with the skills to play the chromatic pipe and the ability to teach primary students to play the instrument in institutions of general secondary education.
The article notes that the organizational and methodological foundations of instrumental and performance training for higher education students involve mastering the content of the course “Additional Musical Instrument” acquiring skills in playing the pipe, selecting folk melodies by ear, and improvising during individual and group lessons, as well as through self-study.
The authors believe that during the music-theoretical training, future music teachers can gain knowledge about the history of musical instruments and folk instrumental and vocal music (course “History of Music”), skills in analyzing melody structure, sight-singing exercises and folk melodies to be performed on the pipe, transposing, and creating second and third parts for a melody (courses “Solfeggio”, “Analysis of Musical Works”). Methodological training will provide higher education students with knowledge of organizational forms, methods for incorporating pipe playing into music lessons, techniques for developing students’ performance skills, and knowledge of authorial methods for playing the chromatic pipe (course “Methods of Music Education”, elective course “Methods of Collective Music Making”).
The authors conclude that a comprehensive approach to the instrumental, performance, music-theoretical, and methodological training of future music teachers in learning to play the pipe can become an important component of the educational and professional program and individual courses, positively influencing their ability to teach primary students to play the pipe in institutions of general secondary education, enriching knowledge about Ukrainian folk music, expanding the possibilities of promoting national art, and fostering patriotic education.
