Abstract

The article draws the attention of Ukrainian art teachers to contemporary Chinese opera as an integral part of the national musical and theatrical culture of China. The aim of the article is to explore the features of modern opera in China as a potential subject of study in the “Art” course for school students and in the training of students in the context of Western-Eastern interaction and cultural dialogue.

Based on the research of Chinese scholars, the article outlines the periodization of the development of so-called Chinese academic opera. It is shown that the core principle in developing this art form is the Westernization of opera while preserving the national roots of ancient Chinese musical art, which has influenced the musical language, stage direction, scenography, and vocal style. One key factor is the reference to plots from ancient Chinese legends and historical events, with productions characterized by the spectacle, epic scale, and a sense of “timelessness.” Examples of opera productions from different periods of the formation of the modern image of Chinese opera throughout the XX and early XXI centuries are provided.

The article examines examples of grand opera, such as “Butterfly. The Poet’s Path” and “The Canal. The Ballad of the River”, demonstrating the merging of national traditions of ancient Chinese opera with the genre characteristics and influences of Western European opera art in contemporary Chinese music, theatre, and arts education.

These examples of modern Chinese opera are considered as potential subjects of study in the integrated “Art” course for school students.

The author concludes that there is a promising future for continued exploration of recent Chinese operas as national treasures, including “Wild Land” and “The Sun Rises” by Jin Xiang, “The First Emperor” by Tang Dong etc. Mastering such experiences is of interest to both European performers and students in understanding Eastern art in general, including its ethical and philosophical foundations. However, this should be accompanied by mastering the specific performance manner and delving into the stylistic features of both the works and the singing, which also requires specialized studies.
