Mind maps as an effective tool for structuring and visualizing educational material in art lessons

Abstract

The article addresses the issue of using mind maps in the educational process of institutions of general secondary education.

It discusses the possibilities and advantages of using mind maps as didactic material. Due to their multifunctionality, mind maps promote the development of analytical and creative, imaginative and associative, systemic and constructive thinking, memory enhancement, student activation, and increased motivation for learning. They also facilitate interaction among students in group work.

The effectiveness of this method in activating students’ cognitive activity in art lessons is analyzed, taking into account the specificity of art lessons. The purpose of creating mind maps—visualizing, structuring, and classifying ideas—facilitates this. The types of mind maps that contribute to this are noted: standard, high-speed, master maps, and mega–maps, each with its own tasks.

The algorithm for creating and designing mind maps is described, and applications and cloud services (including MindMeister, Mindomo, and SpiderScribe) are helpful for art teachers during their creation.

The article provides examples of using mind map technology at different stages of the art lessons in the 7th grade when studying topics such as “Media”, and “Radio – a dynamic type of media”.

It is concluded that using this method is appropriate during: processing a new idea or ideas; mastering large volumes of information; searching for new solutions to tasks; investigating a problem or its part and identifying problematic issues; summarizing, and systematizing material. This allows using mind maps at all lesson stages: activation of basic knowledge, revision, explanation of new material, consolidation, control and systematization, generalization of knowledge, homework, and independent work. Therefore, using mind maps in art lessons can become a valuable pedagogical tool for teachers to promote a deep understanding and application of artistic concepts in the educational process.
