Dnipropetrovsk piano school: origins and ways of evolution

The article is devoted to the history and peculiarities of the development of the pedagogical and performing activities of the Katerynoslav-Dnipropetrovsk piano school, which has passed its way in 125 years in the world of activities of its most outstanding representatives: S. O. Brilliant-Leven, A. M. Shepelevskyi, M. Yu. Heiman, M. L. Oberman, Yu. M. Novikova. The influence of graduates of the Dniprovsk piano school on the development of pianism in the republics of the post-Soviet period is recorded. It is emphasized that at the stage of the rise of modern national patriotism, based on the essential world values of musical culture, the emphasis shifts in the direction of in-depth study and promotion of national piano art.
It is established that the Katerynoslav-Dnipropetrovsk piano school is heterogeneous in origin and is a part of Ukraine's national piano culture. The school is not monolithic; it has a rather complex structure.
From the beginning, the Katerynoslav-Dnipropetrovsk piano school developed peculiar currents, which were due to the influence of several leading centers of the professional musical culture of the 2nd half of the 19th - 1st half of the 20th centuries, in particular, Kyiv, Odesa. Qualified teachers and performers, pupils of the Warsaw, Vienna, Leipzig, Paris, Parma, Prague, and Rome conservatories staffed the school.
Dniprovsk piano school is a polycentric system. It needs a single leader. Its center comprises a group of pianists whose activities belong to different times. Nevertheless, it is carried out in a single geo-cultural space and reveals the family features of musical and performing arts, pedagogy, and cultural and educational activities.
During the 125-year history of its existence, the Dniprovsk Piano School has trained several thousand musicians. One of its typical features is the disclosure of students’ all-around creative possibilities. Therefore, there are not only pianists-soloists, concertmasters, and teachers but also organists, harpsichordists, composers, conductors, musicologists, and figures of musical culture. Throughout its existence, the school preserves the continuity of the development of pianistic culture and education in the region, supporting the best world and domestic traditions of piano performing art.
