The article deals with the importance of the potential of decorative arts in patriotic education of preschoolers and schoolchildren in the educational process of institutions of preschool and general secondary education. In this context, creating compositions by children of preschool and school age in decorative techniques on patriotic themes is considered as an effective means of educating patriotic feelings and other qualities and traits of future Ukrainian patriots.
Some examples of works of decorative art by Ukrainian masters are given, which the authors of current textbooks and albums of artistic and creative activity recommend for perception and discussion with children and students in the educational process. In particular, the works of decorative arts proposed for viewing by preschoolers within the framework of the “Sure Start” educational program and the albums of artistic and creative activities of older preschoolers developed for it (by the authors V.V. Ragozina, N.V. Ocheretiana) are singled out. In addition, the current art textbooks of various authors’ collectives include works of decorative arts for primary and secondary school students. This allows us to trace the continuity of patriotic education in various sections of the education system.
The samples of various artistic and creative tasks for children and students for creating decorative technical and patriotic compositions are highlighted. In accordance with the age characteristics of preschoolers, primary and secondary school students, practical tasks are offered that allow them to work out and thereby learn the pictorial possibilities of a number of artistic, natural and auxiliary materials (paper, cardboard, threads, fabrics, herbs, cereals, etc.). Preschoolers and schoolchildren deepen their knowledge about the state and folk symbols of Ukraine, while they are creating decorative compositions. Moreover, a conscious desire to reproduce some of them in the varieties of children’s creativity, and an understanding of their place and meaning in works of decorative and applied art in general is developed.
To facilitate the creation of decorative compositions by preschoolers and schoolchildren, a systematic visual and descriptive guide is provided for educators and art teachers, which allows the realization of the author’s creative idea. According to the children and students’ artistic skills, artistic and creative abilities, artistic tastes and preferences, as well as the subject and educational context of classes and art lessons, the given examples can be transformed and modified.
