Trembita as a Symbol of Hutsul Culture

Abstract

The article deals with the ancient Ukrainian folk musical instrument – trembita. The history of origin of the trembita and the peculiarities of the production of this musical instrument and the specificity of its sound have been revealed. Based on analysis of historical, ethnographic, musicological sources, the first mention of trembita and the usage of the instrument in life of ancient Ukrainian mountain dweller in have been discovered. It has allowed to distinguish the following functions of trembita: communication, warning, time signal, ritual events. The features of the extraction of musical sounds on trembita have been described. The peculiarities of trembita signals according to the events and life circumstances of the Hutsuls, and the differentiation of trembita music in the modern Cosmatsk and Brusturivsk areas (polonynska music, Christmas carols, funeral music).

The main functions of the trembita, that were lost, have been highlighted. Firstly, trembita has been defined as a musical instrument – occasionally in the orchestras of the Hutsul folk instruments at the festivals of ethnographic music; Secondly, trembita has been characterized as an exhibit of ethnographic museums in Hutsulshchyna. The famous Hutsul trembita players have been named.

The materials of the article will be useful for art teachers in musical education of schoolchildren, teachers of extracurricular activities and out-of-school educational institutions, students’ self-education.
