The author invites the readers to get acquainted with the individual works of exposition “For Dessert. Traditions of the dessert table in the works of art of the museum collection” (curator Liudmila Kravchenko) at The Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko National Museum of Arts, Kyiv. The main educational goal of the exhibition project is to highlight the culture, aesthetics and traditions of sweets and drinks consumption of the so-called “dessert table”. The exposition is divided into conditional thematic sections: “Tea”, “Coffee”, “Chocolate”, “Sweets and Digestive”.
During the preparation of this project, a great scientific study was carried out: the attribution of each of the exhibits was specified, the historical names and appointments of certain objects, the place and time of their creation, the names of mould operator, masters of painting and gilding, the peculiarities of unique historical technologies were determined. The complexity of the research was that it received little scholarly attention in our country, but professional publications were only made by foreign scientist, in particular the articles of the Victoria and Albert Museum (London, Great Britain), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, the USA), N. Yu. Biriukova and N. I. Kazakevich’s a series of publications issued by The State Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg, Russia).
The article deals with the selected works of European porcelain presented at the exhibition, in particular, the items of the Meissen tea service, the rare Saint-Cloud teapot, the Venetian set for chocolate and the Sevres dessert service. Materials are illustrated with exhibits of The Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko National Museum of Arts.
The material of the article can be used by teachers of “Art” in secondary and high school during the study of European decorative art. Moreover, students of 10-11 grades can be interested in creating their creative art projects, so they prepare their papers, video reviews, and virtual tours of The Khanenko Museum. The prospect of further research is to prepare and publish the scientific catalogue of the European porcelain collection of The Khanenko Museum.
