Abstract

The article is devoted to the main principles of the initial violin teaching method Colourstrings, as well as experience of its implementation by the author in Ukraine. During the implementation of this teaching method, teaching young violinists and pre-instrumental training was carried out. The beginner violinists were attending violin classes, playing the “Merry Strings Orchestra”, participating in outdoor events. Colourstrings method, developed by the violinist G. Szilvey, is based on the principles of the Z. Kodály’s musical education system. The method focuses on children and their needs in musical development. Colourstrings method is divided into three sections: pre-instrumental – “Music kindergarten” – preparation for teaching how to play the violin; teaching how to play the violin based on the relative solfeggio; teaching how to play the violin based on the absolute notation system. In the process of pre-instrumental training, preschoolers’ motivation for playing the violin and their musical abilities are developed, their musical experience is enriched. In addition, children learn the basics of musical literacy with the help of a pre-musical notation. The violin methodology combines the individual and group forms of learning.

Summing up the experience of implementation of the Colourstrings method, the following innovative aspects were noted: intensification of mastering of musical literacy and development of musical hearing through the use of colour, visual images and relative solmisation; optimization of the initial playing the violin through using “numbered” pizzicato, playing natural harmonics, transposing and improvising melodies. These aspects can significantly improve the effectiveness of the initial stage in teaching how to play the violin, as well as it will lay a foundation for child’s musicality.
